October 3
After the disappointments and damage at Knoxville, we have decided to pack it in for the 2007 season. Chris has a lot of irons in the fire at home and at work, and we just don't have time to get the car rebuilt in time to make it to the season ending WDRL event at Davenport, IA. We will get to work rebuilding the car over the winter and we will work hard to improve our program and come out with both barrels loaded in 2008. We would like to say thanks to all of our fans and sponsors for supporting us throughout an up and down 2007 season. We greatly appreciate all the support.

Stay tuned here over the fall and winter months for the latest Smyser Racing news and updates.

September 29
Night #3 at Knoxville and we had to pass 6 cars in the B-main to earn a starting spot in the big show. In hotlaps, the car was a little tight, but still very fast. We made a couple of small changes and lined up for a furious 20 laps to see if we could make it from 12th into the top 6. Chris drove hard down the front straight at the drop of the green and as he entered turn one, something broke on the right rear corner of the car sending the rear end sliding toward the wall. Chris fought to regain control, but ended up smacking the fence with the right rear corner. The front end then climbed up on the wall and Chris nearly turned over, but he was able to get the car off the wall and back on all 4 wheels. The right front and right rear suspension was damaged badly enough that we had to retire for the night. What a disappointing end to our Knoxville run. We would have very likely been able to race our way into the A-main, but we will never know now.

September 28
Night #2 at Knoxville and we drew #70 out of 75 for qualifying. The car was very quick in hotlaps, and we were turning laps within 2 tenths of quick time for the night. The race track slowed down quite a bit after the first 20 or so cars took time, and Chris turned a respectable lap that put him 35th out of 55 cars. In the heat race, we put on harder tires in an attempt to learn our lesson from the night before. This time, though, the track held enough bite to require softer tires on the LR and RF, and we ended up fading to a 7th place run. In the B-main, Chris started 13th and fell back to 16th before moving up to 11th. We again missed the A-main. We had been 28th in total points after Thursday night, but we fell to 36th in total points after Friday. We would be lining up 12th in the B-main on Saturday night.

September 27 - Knoxville Raceway - Knoxville, IA
The 4th annual Knoxville Late Model Nationals saw 66 of the best late models in the country sign in to race for a starting spot in Saturday's $35,000 to win 100 lap main event. Chris timed in 24th out of 66 cars on Thursday night to start off with a decent point total. In the heat race, we went too soft on tires and were only able to move up one spot to 7th. Chris lined up 11th in the B-main and had raced up to 6th when the caution flew with just a handful of laps left. On the restart, the car nearly spun when Chris gassed it up due to a broken LR shock mount. Chris fought the car to an 8th place finish and missed the transfer to the A-main.

September 21 - I-44 Speedway - Lebanon, MO
Chris traveled south to race Mike Crump's 00 GTO in a MARS/MLRA challenge event. Chris came from the last row of his heat race and was battling for the 3rd spot when contact between he and Denny Woodworth broke the right front tie rod and sent Chris spinning. We were forced to run the B-main where Chris took the win to earn a starting spot in the A-main. At the drop of the green in the A-main, Chris rocketed forward from his 18th starting spot and had made it all the way to 12th when the first caution flew on lap 2. On the restart, Chris again charged forward and was all the way to 6th when the caution flew again on lap 9. On the restart, Chris was looking to move to the front when Will Vaught drove in and made hard contact with the left side of the car and sent Chris spinning wildly over the bank in turn 2. Chris made extremely hard contact with the concrete wall on the driver's side of the car. Chris had the wind knocked out of him but he was ok. We aren't sure what Will was thinking, but I’m sure Chris will have a few words with him the next time they race together. The car suffered pretty bad damage, and we were forced to head home and not compete in the Saturday night event.

September 18:
Last weekend we planned to attend the Yankee Dirt Classic at Farley, IA. Chris was very sick with a head and chest cold, and we had a miss in our engine that we were attempting to diagnose on Thursday night late. We made the decision to stay home and just start getting the car prepared for the Knoxville Latemodel Nationals coming up on September 27-29. This weekend, Chris will be heading south to drive Mike Crump's car in a pair of MARS/MLRA challenge events at the I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, MO. The Friday Sept 21 event pays $2500 to win, while the Saturday night show pays $3000 to win. We were very quick there at the Larry Phillips memorial race in early September and were sidelined with broken rocker arms in the engine early on in the A-main. We are hoping that we can keep the bad luck and the gremlins away and put the car at the front and keep it there this weekend.

UPDATE: Friday September 14 - We have made a last minute change of schedule for this weekend. We will not be attending the Yankee Dirt Classic in Farley, IA. We found problems with our engine on Thursday and we have decided to stay home and begin preparing for the Knoxville Late Model Nationals to be held on September 27-29. Next weekend, Chris will be heading south to race Mike Crump's 00 machine at the I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, MO in a pair of MARS/MLRA challenge events.

September 12
This weekend, Chris will be heading north to the Farley Speedway in Farley, IA to compete in the 30th annual Yankee Dirt Classic. Time trials, heat races and B-mains will be run on Friday night, while the 100 lap A-main will be run on Saturday. Let's hope we have a good car and can earn a solid starting spot in the big show.

Saturday September 8 - Eldon Raceway - Eldon, IA
Chris and Lamby loaded up the hauler and headed to the Eldon Raceway to compete in a $2,000 to win event. Chris raced from the 2nd row to finish 2nd in his heat race to earn a redraw spot. Chris's drawing luck was about usual as he drew the #7 out of 8 to start on the 4th row. The track was very slick and had been sheepsfooted which made traction hard to get. Chris fought hard and was able to move up to 5th, but the car was just a little too loose to move on forward. A top 5 finish with no damage is a good night, but we were disappointed that we didn't move up more.

September 6
This weekend, Chris will be heading to the Eldon Raceway in Eldon, IA on Saturday night September 8th to compete in a $2,000 to win show as part of the Terry Petersen Memorial event. The following weekend, we plan to head to Farley, IA to compete in the Yankee Dirt Track Classic. Let's hope we can have a little better luck to go along with the fast race car that we've got!

Saturday Sept 1 - Chris took the car out for the warmup session prior to the A-main, and the car was super fast and on rails. We felt very confident about our chances for a top 5 finish. When the green flag flew, the car did not take off like it should, and the engine sounded sour. Chris was forced to pull in after a few laps and the guys found that the engine had broken 3 rocker arms. It was a very disappointing finish to the night as we felt like the car was definitely good enough to stay up front. With the damage to the engine, we elected to head home for the weekend and did not race at Monett on Sunday night.

Friday August 31 - I-44 Speedway - Lebanon, MO - Chris traveled south to run Mike Crump's 00 machine at the Larry Phillips Memorial event paying $10,000 to win. Chris made it into the 20 lap qualifying feature by finishing 4th in his heat race and lined up 14th for the 20 lap race. The top 10 spots would be locked into the first 5 rows for the big show on Saturday, so the racing would be fast and furious. Chris held his own for the first 10 laps as the car was a little tight. As the laps wound down, Chris fought hard and made his move into the top 10, earning a strong 7th place finish to lock him into the show.

August 31
This weekend, Chris will be heading south to race Mike Crump's mastersbilt GTO in a couple of events over 3 days.

On Friday and Saturday we will be at the I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, MO for a $10,000 to win MARS/MLRA event. On Sunday September 2, we plan to head on down to the Monett Speedway in Monett, MO to compete in another MARS/MLRA event paying $3,000 to win.

Let's hope for some better luck than we had on Wednesday so we can get the car to the front where it belongs!

Wednesday August 29 - Lee County Speedway - Donnellson, IA
Chris and Sonny headed to Donnellson to race in the Short Track Nationals on a day where it finally looked like it might not rain out the races. Chris lined up in the 3rd row of his heat race and was fighting for a spot in the redraw when a tangle in front of him blocked the track.

Chris made hard contact with the front end of the car and ended up with a blown radiator and a bent up front bumper. The guys worked hard to repair the car and get it ready for the A-main.

Chris lined up in the 21st starting spot for the 35 lap event. Chris took a couple of laps to sort out the car and then went to work moving forward. Chris raced hard throughout the race and with no cautions to help him was able to finish in the 10th spot and was knocking on the door of the 7th 8th and 9th place cars at the checkers.

The car was very fast but we just had to start at the wrong end of the field.

August 27
This week, we plan to head to the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, IA on Wednesday August 29 for the short track nationals.

Then on Friday August 31 we will head back to the I-44 Speedway to compete in the $10,000 to win Larry Phillips Memorial 2 day event.

We have not finalized our plans for the remainder of the weekend yet.

We may head on down to the MARS/MLRA event at the Monett Speedway on Sunday Sept 2, or we may head to the WDRL event at the Quad City Raceway in East Moline, IL. We will probably just play it by ear and see how things are going as the weekend unfolds. Let's hope we can have some good racing luck this week and keep gaining momentum as we head into the last part of the season.

Saturday August 25 - I-44 Speedway - Lebanon, MO
All the racing around home was rained out, so Chris headed south to race Mike Crump's car at the I-44 Speedway. Chris stormed from the 2nd row to win his heat race and earn the pole position for the A-main.

Chris raced door to door with outside front row started Brad Looney for the first 3 laps before Looney surged into the lead exiting turn 4. Chris chased Looney for the remainder of the caution free 20 lapper and was unable to get close. Looney was very strong and we were good, but just not good enough.

We took a 2nd place finish and gained some knowledge for this weekend's big event.

August 13
This week, we will be off until Sunday August 19th when we will head to the Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, MO to compete in the MLRA event at the Missouri State Fair. The following week will be a very important week for us as we compete in the final 3 USRA events of the season. Chris is locked in a very tight battle with Chad Simpson for the USRA Championship. The final 3 USRA events are scheduled for Wednesday August 22 at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, IA, Friday August 24 at the Bloomfield Speedway in Bloomfield, IA, and Saturday August 25 at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, MO. We will be working hard on the car to make sure that we are ready to go out and fight for the title. We hope everyone can come out and cheer us on as we battle it out to the end!

Saturday August 11 - Lucas Oil Speedway - Wheatland, MO
Chris and Mark Antal headed south and joined up with the Crump team to compete in the MARS/MLRA shootout at the Lucas Oil Speedway. Chris started from the pole of the first heat race and lead all 10 laps to take the win. Chris earned the 7th starting spot in the 40 lap A-main.

Friday August 10 - Cresco, IA
Chris and Nick Young headed north to the Cresco Speedway to compete in a USRA event. Chris charged from the last row of his heat race up to the 2nd spot to earn a front row outside starting spot for the $2,000 to win A-main.

August 8
This Friday we will be heading to Cresco, IA to compete in the USRA event. Chris will be looking to extend his points lead as we head into the last 4 USRA events of the season. We plan to be better prepared and ready to go for this important event. On Saturday August 11, we plan to head south to drive Mike Crump's car in the MARS/MLRA event. Our racing luck has been terrible this past few weeks, and we are hoping to get it turned around so that we can have a good last half of the season. Stay tuned here for the latest news and results.

Tuesday August 7 - Dubuque Speedway - Dubuque, IA
Chris, Sonny and Jamie Jackson traveled to Dubuque to compete in the Lucas Oil Series event.

Saturday August 4 - Airport Raceway - Springfield, MO
Chris and Sonny traveled south to meet up with the Crump crew and head for the MARS race in Springfield.

August 3
This weekend, we will be off on Friday before heading south on Saturday to compete in the MARS event at the Airport Raceway in Springfield, MO. On the following Tuesday August 7th, Chris will return to the seat of his own 25s machine to compete in the Lucas Oil Series event at the Dubuque Speedway in Dubuque, IA.

We plan to follow that up with a trip to the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, IA on Friday August 10th to compete in the USRA event.

We will finish the week by heading south to race Mike Crump's 00s machine at the MARS/MLRA event at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO on Saturday August 11.

Stay tuned here for the latest schedule updates, news and results.

July 30
We have not finalized our plans for this weekend, but we will post them later this week, so stay tuned for the latest news and updates.

Saturday July 28 - I44 Speedway - Lebanon, MO
Chris, Sonny and Jamie Jackson headed out to join up with the Crump crew to race the weekly show at the I44 speedway. Chris raced a loose car to a 3rd place finish in the heat race.

July 25
This Friday we will be heading to the USRA event at the Bloomfield Speedway in Bloomfield, IA. On Saturday, we plan to race the Crump 00s machine at the I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, MO. Let's hope for some decent officiating and a car that is as dominant as the one we had in West Union. Special thanks to Todd Aeschliman, Dad and Martin Games for all their hard work in repairing the car to keep us in the show last night, and to Julie Games for sending us the care package.

Tuesday July 24 - Fayette County Raceway - West Union, IA
Chris, Sonny and Todd headed north to run the Indee Open event in West Union. We had made extensive repairs to our race car after Quincy and Davenport 2 weeks ago, and we wanted to shake the car down before the USRA event at Bloomfield this Friday.

Saturday July 21 - Lucas Oil Speedway - Wheatland, MO
The Crump team traveled to the Lucas Oil Speedway for another Lucas Oil Series event. Chris timed in 19th fastest of 42 cars on hand but fought a very tight race car to a bad heat finish. We tried to loosen up the car for the B-main. The car was better but Chris finished 4th, just one spot from making the A-main. It was a disappointing night, but we were able to put the car on the trailer in one piece.

Friday July 20 - Tri City Speedway - Granite City, IL
Chris and Sonny headed to St. Louis to join up with the Crump team to compete in the Lucas Oil Series event. Chris raced his way into the A-main in the heat race and lined up 18th for the A-main. Chris ran a steady race on the very rough race track and worked his way to the 12th spot at the checkers. A good finish against a very tough field of cars.

July 16
Wow, what a tough stretch of racing. We had a good car several nights, but we did not get much to show for it. Let’s hope we can turn our luck around as we move forward. This weekend, we will be racing the Mike Crump machine on Friday July 20 and Saturday July 21. We will either be heading to Granite City, IL or to Bolivar, MO on Friday, but we don’t know which for sure yet. We will post our plans later this week. On Saturday July 21, we will be heading to the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO to compete in the Lucas Oil/MLRA event. Let’s hope we can have a fast car and some decent luck for a change!

Wednesday July 11 – Davenport Speedway – Davenport, IA – Chris and Sonny traveled to the SPI Open Shootout event. The car would not run properly and Chris went backwards in his heat and was forced to run the b-main. The guys worked on the fuel system and the car ran better for a few laps in the b, but still was not right. Chris started 16th in the A-main and was nursing a poorly running car in an attempt to get a top 10 finish when leader Brian Harris got into his rear bumper and turned Chris into the outside wall on the back stretch. The right front of the car was severely damaged and we were done for the night. We decided to head home to make repairs and get ready for our next weekend of racing.

Tuesday July 10 – Quincy Raceways – Quincy, IL – Night #3 with the UMP Summernationals. The track was muddy after a rain storm hit just before hotlaps. Chris jumped the cushion timing in and was forced to start the heat race from the rear. Chris had stormed past 3 cars on the first lap when the quick change gears broke and forced him to the infield. We also damaged the rear end and transmission and were unable to complete repairs in time for the b-main and were done for the night.

Monday July 9 – CJ Raceway – Columbus Junction, IA – Chris timed in 2nd fastest in his group and earned a front row outside heat starting spot. Jeep Van Wormer took the early lead from the pole, but Chris ran him down and swept around him on the outside and drove away to take an impressive heat win and earn the outside front row starting spot for the $6,000 to win A-main. Chris fell in behind polesitter Shannon Babb in the early laps. Don O’Neal and Brian Birkhofer worked past Chris, and he was sitting a solid 4th when he jumped the cushion exiting turn 4 and lost 3 spots. Chris was sitting 7th with 10 laps to go when he got over the cushion again in turn 2 and fell to 10th. Chris was gaining on the 8th and 9th place cars late in the race, but settled for a disappointing 10th place run. The car was capable of being in the top 5, but we just had some bad breaks on the treacherous cushion that cost us some spots.

Sunday July 8 – Quad City Raceway – East Moline, IL –
Chris and Sonny headed to the Quad Cities with the 25s car to join up with the UMP Summernationals. Chris made a mistake in time trials and ended up at the back of a heat race. The car was good, but Chris failed to make it to the transfer. In the b-main, we left on the soft tires which was a big mistake. Chris ended up 4th, one spot from the transfer. We loaded up and headed to the next race.

Saturday July 7 – Lake Ozark Speedway – Eldon, MO – The Crump team traveled to the Ozarks to compete in the MARS/MLRA event. Chris started outside front row of his heat race, but got freight trained on the bottom side back to 5th. He raced hard but could not make up any ground and was forced into the b-main. The guys worked on the car and Chris stormed to the front of the b-main and drove away to take the win. However, when he returned to the pit, the car was losing water and overheating. The radiator had been pushed back into the fan on the rough track, and the engine had lost a head gasket. Chris drove Reid Millard’s car from the tail of the a-main to a 16th place finish.

Friday July 6 – Tri City Speedway – Granite City, IL – The UMP Summernationals traveled to Tri City Speedway. Chris timed in 4th fastest in his group but missed the setup in the heat race and was forced to run the b-main. Chris had stormed from the 5th row to 4th in the b-main and was looking at a qualifying spot when he was hit hard and taken out by one of the local cars. Chris parked the car for the night.

Tuesday July 3 – 24 Raceway – Moberly, MO – We traveled to the 24 Raceway to compete in the MLRA event. Chris made the show through the heat race and started in the 16th spot. On the opening lap Chris got tangled up in a crash that happened in front of him and was forced to pit for some sheet metal repair. Chris returned to the tail of the field and raced a damaged car from 23rd up to 13th.

Monday July 2
We have been informed that the MLRA event scheduled for tonight at the Midway Speedway in Lebanon, MO has been postponed due to massive amounts of rain that have fallen in the area over the last few days.

The race will be rescheduled at a later date. We will be heading into action tomorrow night July 3 at the 24 Raceway in Moberly, MO in the MLRA event, and then we plan to head to the Mid America Motor Speedway in Coffeyville, Kansas to compete in a MARS event. We will be racing Mike Crump’s 00s machine in both events.

Let’s hope for some dry weather and a fast car to take us to the front.

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Friday June 29 – Iowa State Fair Speedway – Des Moines, IA
Chris traveled to Des Moines to race the #7 Mastersbilt owned by Russ Byriel.

Thursday June 28
We headed south Wednesday night to compete in the UMP Summernationals event at the Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, MO. We got there just as the storms did and the races were rained out.

We would like to announce that Chris will be heading to the Iowa State Fair Speedway in Des Moines, IA on Friday night June 29 to compete in the IMCA weekly racing event. Chris will be driving the # 7 Mastersbilt owned by Russ Byriel. Russ purchased this car from Chris last fall and Chris is heading up to shake the car down for Russ and work with him on how to adjust and tune the car since this will be Russ's first time racing in the late model class.

Due to the cancellation of the Memphis USRA event, we will be off on Saturday but will return to action at the Lebanon Midway Speedway on Monday July 2, followed by a trip to the 24 Raceway in Moberly, MO on Tuesday July 3. We will be driving the Mike Crump owned 00s machine in both events.

Let's hope we can have a good run for Russ on Friday and then get up on the wheel and put the 00s machine at the front both nights next week. Stay tuned here for the latest Smyser Racing news and updates.

Saturday June 9 - Valley Speedway - Grain Valley, MO
The MLRA Thunder Tour rolled to the Valley Speedway and Chris Thundered the field in his heat race from the pole by racing to nearly a half track advantage at the checkers. Our pole starting spot didn't earn us any passing points, so we lined up 5th for the A-main.

Sunday and Monday May 27-28 - Dubuque Speedway - Dubuque, IA
The rumble on the river 100 WDRL event was next up for us on the weekend. Chris timed in very late in the group qualifying session and ended up a disappointing 23rd fastest. The track had slowed down and the car was too loose for us to turn a fast lap.

Saturday May 26 - The WDRL event at West Union, IA was rained out.

May 27
Friday May 25 – Bloomfield Speedway – Bloomfield, IA
– A solid field of 21 late models was on hand for the $3,000 to win USRA event. Chris stormed from the 6th starting spot in his heat race up to 3rd to earn the 6th starting spot in the 30 lap A-main. The boys tightened the car up for the slick track conditions, but in the early laps, Chris was bottled up in traffic and fell back to the 8th spot before he was able to work his way clear and begin moving forward. Chris used the bottom side of the track to slide up to the 5th spot by the time the first caution flew just before the halfway point. On the restart, Chris worked past both Justin Reed and Nick Marolf to take the 3rd spot. Chris set his sights on the front running Simpson brothers and ran them down just as they entered heavy lapped traffic with about 5 laps to go. Chris actually overtook Chad Simpson briefly in heavy traffic for the 2nd spot, but then had to work through some slower cars in the bottom lane. Chris took the checkers just behind winner Chris Simpson and 2nd place Chad Simpson with a solid 3rd place run.

The car was very quick all night, and we were as good as we have ever been on the slick, but we still can get a little better. We are definitely looking forward to getting back to action right away.

January 9
We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday season! We have been hard at work in the shop repairing cars and installing new custom sheetmetal for other racers. You can see some photos on our fabrication page. We have also been building front and rear bumpers, sidebars and body mounts. We took delivery of 3 new 2007 Mastersbilt chassis just before Christmas and we have been hard at work getting them ready for powdercoating. Once they return, we will be installing custom sheetmetal on them. One will be our new 25s machine, one will be Mike Crumps new 00s car, and one will be going to the Mike and Adam Helmick race team. We will post photos as we go along to chart our progress.

The 2007 series schedules are starting to trickle out, and we are putting together a tentative master schedule of our 2007 events. We will post it up on the site as soon as we can fill in the blanks.

Thanks to Danny Howk of Heartland Motorsports for revamping the site. Browse around and check out his excellent work. Check back often as we will be posting our schedule and adding regular updates of news and note for our race team as we head full bore toward the 2007 racing season!
